We recently tried out a new sushi place in Montréal to change it up from our normal places. We were invited to a place called Sushi Mou-shi on the Decarie highway. We’ve been trying new sushi places to keep looking for that perfect rice. We’ve been to a few other places but this one was unique in its own way which made it nice. We always wonder why we stayed away from sushi so long but we are not making up the lost time. The price was right here but the hidden little costs are what will get you in the end.
Sushi Mou-shi is at first not a physically appealing place and would make you wonder if you’re at the right place for sushi. It looks kind of run down or out dated and can use some touching up. We figured we would go for the whole experience before making a final decision. They have their normal tables but we were sitting in an area where you actually sit on the floor during the meal but they made it somewhat comfortable. They have the floor cut open with the table resting just above it so that you can sit on the floor for the experience but you have plenty of room for your legs. We will get back to this feature later. While this was unique for the restaurant it could have been displayed a little more. You have to take your shoes off and settle in but that is all you get to see. With some extra effort here this feature could make this restaurant stand out.
The food is the next part of the review and we love our sushi. For 23$ it’s all you can eat sushi and they don’t charge you for pieces that you leave behind like other places. We put in orders for the type of sushi we wanted and were looking forwarded to a good meal. That looking forward part took a while as it took almost a solid hour to get our food after ordering it. Now we understand we were a bigger group but this shouldn’t have taken so long. Don’t get us wrong, the food was awesome and really good but the waiting time just killed any food we could have tried. The sushi was good and came with decent serving amounts. It was worth every penny if the food came in a timely manner.
So after the long wait for our food and just sitting on the floor, your back gets sore and you can get a little restless. So this is where the unique feature hurts them in the end. As you lean back or put your hands on the floor, you put your hands on the floor and get dirty, not so enjoyable. The floor not to mention is the old apartment style floor and nothing fancy or even upbeat. We appreciate the effort but it’s time to step it up with the whole joint.
In the end, this places value shows through the food and little cracks in the restaurant. We enjoyed the food and the all you can eat option but the scenery and features of the restaurant might make us choose another place before this one. With a little renovating and help, this place could be a really great sushi joint. The sitting on the floor option is wonderful but making the whole experience around it is what counts. Overall we would give this joint a generous 6/10 and would suggest that if you want good sushi and don’t mind sitting in an older looking place, this could suit you. We have included a link to the menu and would suggest you try it at least once before judging it. That’s what we did.
